Sunday June 18, 2000: Stratford’s Scott Steckly in the #22 AW Millwrights/Erb Transport Pontiac Grand Prix finished a CASCAR career best 4th in the Exide 200 at Mosport on Saturday. Steckly started in the thirteenth position after winning his qualifying heat for the third time this season.
The #22 Racing Pontiac time trialed 19th fastest of the 38 cars in attendance. This lined Steckly up third on the grid for the first heat race. Some great driving and a terrific handling car saw Steckly take the lead from the #67 Tiemersma entry at the midpoint of the race and he never looked back. Steckly then lined up 13th for the start of the Exide 200 later in the evening.
Some early race cautions slowed the pace but the #22 Pontiac stayed out of trouble and ran consistently in the top twelve. After stopping for tires and fuel around the midpoint of the race Steckly started picking off competitors in front of him. By lap 140 the AW Millwrights/Erb Pontiac was into the 6th position. With some late race manoeuvres in the ever-challenging turn one, Steckly was able to pick off veterans D. J. Kennington and Kerry Micks to move up to fourth. An elated Steckly said after the race “A few more laps and maybe we would have had something for the #33 of Neil Fair. My team gave me a great car today and I just saved the tires for the end and that’s how I got D.J. and Kerry. We were really hoping for our first podium tonight but we will head to New Brunswick and see what happens there.”
Steckly won the hard charger award at this event last year for passing the most cars and finished a career best in 6th place.
The next event on the schedule for the #22 Racing/AW Millwrights/Erb Transport Pontiac team is the CARQUEST 200 at New Brunswick International Speedway in Fredericton, Saturday & Sunday June 24th & 25th.
