LONDON, ON -- The CASCAR Super Series is heading to Mosport Int'l Raceway this weekend for its first of three road racing events during the 2004 season. The Clarington 200 will mark the seventh year in a row, dating back to 1998, that the legendary Oshawa-area road course has hosted Canada's top stock car tour.

The race is the finale of a doubleheader CASCAR weekend that will see the second race of the CARQUEST Series season take place, on Saturday evening, at the half-mile Mosport Speedway oval, which is located adjacent to the road course. Fans who purchase a weekend ticket package to the Clarington 200 will have free entry to Saturday's 100-lap CARQUEST Series show. Super Series veteran Brad Graham won the season-opening CARQUEST 100 at Cayuga Speedway on June 5.

With one-quarter of the Super Series' schedule consisting of road courses, doing well at Mosport and the Indy events (Toronto and Vancouver) is critical to any driver who has aspirations of winning the National championship. Over the past six seasons, current points leader and two-time CASCAR Super Series champ Peter Gibbons has been a force on the 2.459-mile, 10-turn Mosport circuit. The Canadian Tire / Monroe Brakes Chevy driver has used creative lines and massive horsepower to win the race on three occasions ('99, '00 and '03). He is also the three-time polesitter for the event.

Fresh off a fifth-place result in Saturday's Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200 at Peterborough Speedway, Gibbons is a definite threat to capture his third victory of the young season, this Sunday at Mosport.

Over the years, the majority of CASCAR's competitors have become proficient on road courses. This was evidenced last season when series veterans Ron Beauchamp Jr. and Scott Steckly joined Gibbons on the podium following the 51-lap chase around the scenic Mosport circuit. Beauchamp is looking to build upon his second-place result at Mosport in '03 with a brand new, purpose-built road course version of his MOPAR Parts Dodge; the first he's ever had.

Steckly is also in a position to repeat last year's impressive performance, when he came home third in his Pontiac. The ERB Grand Prix driver is as steady on the road courses as he is on the ovals and more often than not, that is the key to success at Mosport, where it's critical to stay on the track and out of trouble. Another driver to watch will be Jeff Lapcevich, the winner of both CASCAR Indy races in '03.

Qualifying for the Clarington 200 at Mosport Int'l Raceway takes place on Saturday afternoon, following a pair of CASCAR practice sessions, earlier in the day. The Clarington 200 takes the green flag at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon (June 20). Several other classes will be in action this weekend at Mosport, including the Ontario Touring GT Championship, the Honda/Michelin Series, the FV1200 Championship and Cup Lites.
