Lapcevich scores third win of the season with late move on Kennington

NASCAR Pinty's Series championship leader Cayden Lapcevich won the Lucas Oil 250, Saturday night at Autodrome Saint-Eustache.

Cayden Lapcevich

The 16-year-old rookie took on fresh tires during a late caution, went past D.J. Kennington on lap 241 and never looked back.

The win, his third of the season, solidifies his lead in the championship, as his rival Andrew Ranger finished only ninth, after colliding with Alex Labbé and spinning on lap 216. The season ends next week in Kawartha.

Here is how Saturday night's race unfolded:

Lap 1
Jason Hathaway, JF Dumoulin, Alex Tagliani and Simon Dion-Viens make contact to bring out the first caution of the race.

Lap 27
Labbé and Lacroix are fighting for the lead, while Ranger and Lapcevich are fighting for fourth. Kennington holds third between them. On lap 35, Labbé gets by Lacroix, who then falls behind Kennington on lap 40.

Lap 63
The rain that forced the officials to cancel qualifying is coming back. Red flag is out by lap 72 and lasts almost an hour. After a few laps under caution, the race finally restarts on lap 84.

Lap 105
Dion-Vions and Simone collide, bringing out another caution. Labbé, Kennington and Lacroix all pit. Kennington regrets it, as he leaves with the fuel can still attached to his car. He has to serve a stop and go penalty. When the race resumes on lap 116, Dilley leads Lapcevich, Tagliani and Ranger. Lacroix, Labbé and Kennington are 8th, 9th and 12th respectively.

Lap 153
Many battles have shuffled the order. Kennington, Labbé and Lacroix are back in front, in that order. Kennington is still leading by lap 167, but Labbé is putting pressure on him. Two laps later, Lacroix collides with Dion-Viens and has to pit as the race goes under caution again.

Lap 175
Kennington starts pulling away from the field as the race restarts. By lap 190, he has opened up a sizeable gap over Hathaway, Dilley and Tagliani. Labbé is sixth, just ahead of Lapcevich and Ranger.

Lap 216
Trouble for LP Dumoulin, whose engine is smoking, and 10 laps later for Ranger who has spun after colliding with Labbé.

Lap 231
Lapcevich is challenging Kennington for the lead after pitting for fresh tires during the last caution. He makes it stick on lap 241, with nine laps to go, and starts pulling away. He's ahead by about five cars lengths when Hathaway and Labbé collide, bringing out another caution on lap 246.

Lap 251
The race restarts, Lapcevich holds on for the win ahead of Kennington, Dilley Martin, Tagliani, Hathaway and Jackson.
