Kennington looks forward to return to Delaware Speedway
D.J. Kennington expected to contend this Saturday in first race at track for Canadian series since 2013.
As the NASCAR Pinty’s Series gets ready to return to Delaware Speedway for the first time in four years there’s one driver that has to be looking forward to returning to the track and that driver is D.J. Kennington.
Kennington has scored 19 career Pinty’s Series wins in his career but hasn’t visited Victory Lane since 2013. The 39-race stretch is his longest drought in the series.
“I’ve always seemed to run well there and I’m glad we’re going back to Delaware,” said Kennington. “I’ve been fortunate to always run well there and it’s close to home so I can’t wait to get there and see if we get another win.”
Kennington is one of four drivers slated to race on Saturday that have competed in all five previous events at the half-mile oval located in southwestern Ontario and he’s the only driver to finish in the
top-five every time.
The other drivers entered for this weekend that have also started every event at Delaware include Jason White, Jason Hathaway and Mark Dilley. Dilley also owns the track qualifying record.
The St. Thomas, Ontario native picked up wins in 2009, 2010 and 2012 at the track. He has an average finish of second in five previous races.
Kennington will also begin a new role as driver coach for rookie Armani Williams. Williams, a Detroit, Michigan, native, is making his series debut driving a car for Canada’s Best Race Team. Veteran Joey McColm will serve as crew chief on the entry. Williams will compete at select oval events this season.
Williams, who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at age 2, participated in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Combine last fall.
Kevin Lacroix enters the race fresh off of his season-opening win two weeks ago at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Lacroix knows if he’s going to contend for the 2017 Pinty’s Series title, he’ll have to step up his performances on ovals.
“We built a new oval car in the offseason and feel we have improved our oval-track program on our team,” said Lacroix. “I know I’ll have a fast car I just need to work hard to get better finishes at the end of the races.”
Defending and newly named NASCAR Next driver Cayden Lapcevich began defense of his championship with a strong top-five performance at CTMP. On Saturday, Lapcevich returns to the type of track where he recorded all three of this wins.
Lapcevich picked up wins during his championship run on ovals at Wyant Group Raceway, Riverside International Raceway and Autodrome St. Eustache.
