Monte Carlo driver in hunt for rookie honors to be decided at Kawartha
BRADFORD, ONTARIO (September 25, 2008) -- With one race to go in the 2008 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, rookie driver Anthony Simone is hoping for a good showing at the upcoming Dodge Dealers of Ontario Ram 250 at Kawartha Speedway.
The 28-year old Simone is in a close battle with fellow rookie Jason White, and is hoping to take the rookie honors.
"There's been lots of learning this year," said Simone. "It's a very competitive series. We're racing with the top drivers."
A former road racer, Simone started his career in karts, and then worked through several classes of Formula cars before getting behind the wheel of a Formula Atlantic car in 2001.
In 2006 he started stock car racing, and ran in Flamboro Speedway's Late Model division until the end of last year, when the team decided to step up its efforts.
Driving the Crown Modular/Sign-A-Rama 2008 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Simone has had his ups and downs this year.
"We have had a lot of mechanical problems this year," Simone noted. "We had a lot of motors break, and some suspension parts breakage."
"It's been very frustrating," said team crew chief Thatcher Krupp. "We've had lots of breakage. We're just chalking it up to our rookie season and paying your dues. But we're going to step it up and will be going for those rookie honors."
Presently 16th in the points, Simone leads White by nine points for the rookie title.
"It's a tough nut to crack," Krupp continued. "But we can get the job done."
Simone is confident the team has progressed through the season, and is planning on a good finish at Kawartha and taking the rookie title.
"Our goal is to win rookie of the year," he said. "As long as everything stays together we should do well."
Dodge Dealers of Ontario Ram 250 at Kawartha Speedway is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27.
