Hamilton, ON: CASCAR's Dave Jacombs came to St. Eustache for the seventh event on the 2001 Castrol Super Series tour where one year ago here their racing equipment was stolen out of a hotel parking lot prior to the final event of the Eastern Series. Jacombs trip here this time however was much better as he notched a top five finish to keep the Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust Taurus firmly in the Chase for the 2001 Castrol Cup.
Jacombs returned to Quebec with mixed feelings as last year in the first event here he posted a third place podium finish only to return later in the season to lose all their racing equipment. The Speedy Taurus was good right off the trailer and when practice ended Jacombs was ranked in the top eight. Time trials did not go their way however and they were only able to post the fourteenth quickest time. This resulted in the Speedy Taurus having to qualify through the twenty-five lap final qualifier. Jacombs finished second, which lined him up thirteenth on the grid for the start of the Auto Parts Plus 150 later in the evening.
The race was another one of attrition here on the tight 4/10-mile Autodrome St. Eustache. Twenty-three cars took the green flag but when the checkered flag fell only seven cars were left on the lead lap. Jacombs in the Speedy Auto Service Taurus ran consistently all night long and was pleased with the overall effort of the team. "We had a good car in practice but something happened in time trials and I just couldn't get the car around the track" said Jacombs. "Fifth is not a bad finish considering the car was not handling well at all for the second half of the race. The car got really loose but we're happy with our run and the fact we are bringing the car home with only some tire marks on it and no other damage."
Podium finishers included 1. #1 Peter Gibbons 2. #17 D. J. Kennington 3. #4 Don Thomson Jr.
The Jacombs Racing/Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust Taurus team will go to Trois-Rivieres next weekend for the 8th event of the Castrol Super Series unofficially in fourth place in the point standings.
