Jacombs Kawarth race notes

Hamilton, Ontario: Dave Jacombs and the Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust #88 Taurus team did not leave Kawartha Speedway with the result they had hoped for finishing a disappointing 17th. Jacombs, along with the majority of CASCAR drivers were making their first visit to this 3/8 mile banked asphalt oval for the Budweiser 150 on Canada Day.

Jacombs started out strong in practice posting the fifth quickest time during the rain-plagued session. Unfortunately the #88 team drew time trial spot number one and when they attempted their laps the track was scattered with sand from the high winds that were gusting all day. This resulted in a poor qualifying time and a trip to the final qualifier. When all was said and done Jacombs lined up on the grid for the start of the Budweiser 150 in eighteenth position.

The race would not get better for Jacombs and the #88 Speedy Taurus as passing other competitors proved to be difficult on this first visit to the Kawartha race track. Just after the half way point while running in fourteenth Jacombs got tagged from behind by another competitor resulting in a spin that cost him a lap to the leaders. Jacombs resumed racing but when the checkered flag flew they were one lap down to the leaders in seventeenth position.

A frustrated Jacombs said after the race "I had a fairly decent car during practice but it was so hard to pass out there during the race. We had just passed the #60 car and then a few laps later he got into the back of us by accident and there we were a lap down. Some of the teams had a chance to test here but we weren't able to do that even though I am not sure it was a big factor in the final finish."

The podium finishers included first time winner this year and two-time eastern champion Don Thomson Jr. in first 2. Peter Gibbons 3. Mark Dilley.

Unofficially Jacombs moves back one position to fourth in the chase for the Castrol Cup point standings.

The #88 Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust team will be attending the Speedy Auto annual charity golf tournament on Tuesday July 10th at the Cardinal Golf Course in Newmarket and then it is on to the Toronto Molson Indy weekend where Jacombs has posted consistent top ten finishes in both of the two previous CASCAR events here.
