Sunday July 16, 2000: Hamilton's Dave Jacombs in the #88 Speedy Auto Service/Raybestos Brakes Taurus finished a strong 9th in Saturday's Exide 99 Street Fight at the Toronto Molson Indy. Jacombs who started 17th on the grid of 41 cars ran another smooth and consistent race and also continues to stand third in the Eastern Super Series Points chase.
Practice on Friday morning started out slow as the streets were still wet from an earlier rain shower. As practice progressed and the track area dried the times continued to get faster. With only one half hour of practice time, the teams did not get much opportunity to make adjustments to the race cars but Jacombs was happy with the Speedy Taurus right from the start. During the half hour timed session later in the day, Jacombs found it difficult to find clear track for a complete lap in order to post a quick time and settled for the 17th fastest time.
The Exide 99 was slowed on the first lap when some overzealous drivers caused a major crash that almost completely blocked the track. Not only were several cars done for the day but the race was shortened by nearly twenty minutes. When racing resumed the Speedy/Raybestos Taurus lined up fifteenth. Jacombs got stronger as the race progressed and continued to pick off spots one by one. When the checkered flag flew the #88 Speedy Auto Service/Raybestos Brakes Taurus was in 9th position, one of only fourteen cars on the lead lap. An excited Jacombs said, "I am so pleased to be part of this great event and CASCAR history in the making. Hopefully we will see many more races broadcast live in the near future."
Dave Jacombs whose background is oval track racing has adjusted well to turning both right and left and looks forward to the next challenge - The Bumper to Bumper Classic at the Edmonton Municipal Airport Road Course on Sunday July 23.
Jacombs and the 88 Speedy Auto Service/Raybestos Brakes Taurus will be making a stop at the Speedy Auto Service location at 13005 97th Ave in Edmonton on Thursday July 20 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. prior to the three-day event at the Municipal Airport.
