GIBBONS WINS CASCAR RACE BUT THOMSON STILL LEADS STANDINGS

HAMILTON, Ontario, Canada (Sept. 10, 2005) -- Peter Gibbons drove by Don Thomson Jr. with two laps remaining to win the Crown Jewel 200 CASCAR Super Series race at Cayuga 2000 Speedway. The victory was the second for Gibbons at the track in the last two years.

Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for CASCAR racing, building bias-ply tires designed specifically for racing on Canadian short tracks. The tiremaker also sponsors the Goodyear Belts and Hoses Fastest Lap Award. Thomson won the award on the fifth circuit of the 200-lap race. The CASCAR Super Series is the premiere stock car racing series in Canada.

Gibbons is second in the championship standings with one race to go. He trails Thomson by 89 points.

Thomson finished second at Cayuga, 1.077 seconds behind Gibbons. Dave Whitlock finished third, followed by Jeff Lapcevich and Brad Graham. Gibbons averaged 78.314 mph over the race distance and Thomson took the pole with a lap averaging 106.62 mph.

Thomson led most of the last quarter of the race and had a comfortable advantage over Gibbons before a late caution flag bunched the field for a restart with three laps remaining. Gibbons ducked under Thomson after the racing resumed and led the final two laps.

The final race of the season is scheduled for Kawartha Speedway on Sept. 17.
