Monday August 7, 2000: Stratford’s Scott Steckly in the #22 AW Millwrights/Erb Transport Pontiac posted another strong performance with a sixth place finish in this the final event of the Eastern Super Series schedule.
Steckly who felt he would have had a top six at race here earlier in the year but did not due to a cut down tire with five laps to go, posted the sixteenth fastest time during the early timed qualifying session. Steckly then lined up for his qualifying heat and finished third.
The 22 Racing Pontiac lined up in the seventeenth starting position for the Autopro 150 on Sunday afternoon. Steckly went into this event in 9th in the Eastern Super Series Point Standings and hoped to maintain or even move up in the standings. A steady pace was again the order of the day to save the tires for a run to the front at the end. It looked like this event might see a different outcome than most of the previous short track events this year as the first caution did not come out until lap 39 but that was not to be the case. Several caution periods covering a quarter of the race laps resulted in fourteen cars finishing on the lead lap.
Steckly in the AW Millwrights/Erb Transport Pontiac was in 11th place by the 100 lap midway point of the race and was patiently making his moves to the front. During the next fifty laps Steckly ran as high as sixth and as far back as eighth. Some racing incidents and racing luck saw Steckly move from eighth to sixth over the final five laps.
The 22 Racing team finished the season in eighth place in the Eastern Super Series Point Standings an improvement of nine positions over 1999 when Steckly finished seventeenth and earned the Eastern Rookie of the Year title. A lot of this can be attributed to Steckly’s smooth driving style. Tires have been an issue all year with some teams, but his driving style has proven to take care of the tires and allow him a chance to run up front at the end of events all year long.
While the 22 Racing Team did not compete in the western swing of the National Super Series they will participate in the final two National events here in Ontario. The first one being the UAP Napa 250 km event at Mosport International Raceway Road Course on August 25-27. While this will not be a point’s race for them, Steckly looks forward to gaining more road course experience for next year when they hope to compete on the entire Eastern & National circuit, if the funding becomes available.
