Thomson wins Ford Quality Care 300 NELLES CORNERS, ON (July 12, 1998) Don Thomson Jr. of Hamilton, ON won the Ford Quality Care 300 CASCAR Castrol Super

Series race at Cayuga Speedway on Sunday afternoon. The Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver led on various occasions during the 300 lap event, and clearly had the quickest car in the field.

Thomson took the lead, for the final time, on lap 249 and was never passed again. Huntsville, ON's Dan Shirtliff was second across the line in his GM Goodwrench Chevrolet Monte Carlo just over half a second behind Thomson. Jack Monaghan, of Harrow, ON, completed the podium finishers, in his Five Star Service Dodge Avenger.

The race featured a caution-less period from lap 65 to lap 237, during which all of the competitors were forced to make fuel stops under green flag conditions. To followers of CASCAR, it was an unprecedented occurrence.

The confusion of the green flag stops, combined with a technical problem with the electronic scoring system, forced CASCAR officials to pronounce an "unofficial finishing order" following the race. Initially, it was believed that Kelly Williams (GM Goodwrench Pontiac Grand Prix) had finished third, and in doing so, posted the first-ever podium finish by a female in CASCAR Super Series competition. However, in the process of determining an official finish, conclusive evidence later revealed that Williams actually finished in sixth place, the first driver running one lap down to the leaders.

The next race on the CASCAR Castrol Super Series is a Western Series event, the July 18 'Gold Pan 150' at Gold Pan Speedway in Quesnel, BC. Following that, the Eastern and Western teams will turn their attention to the western portion of the National championship, which commences in Calgary the following weekend.
