Sunday June 25, 2000: Stratford native Scott Steckly in the AW Millwrights/Erb Transport Pontiac posted his best career CASCAR finish today at New Brunswick International Speedway in Fredericton with a third place podium finish. Steckly in just his second full season on the CASCAR tour finished fourth last weekend in Mosport and everyone said it was just a matter of time before they earned their first ever CASCAR podium finish. This race, the CARQUEST 200 was the fifth event on the 2000 Rollin' Thunder tour.
During practice and qualifying on Saturday, Steckly was posting consistent top ten to twelve times and wound up with the eleventh quickest time trial with a 14.253. After technical inspection the #33 Skoal car of Neil Fair was deemed illegal and was dropped to the rear of the field. This moved Steckly into the tenth and final time trial starting position and lined the AW Millwrights Pontiac up first in the fast qualifiers heat. Steckly put on a dominating performance and won the heat race gaining more valuable Eastern Super Series points.
Sunday saw Steckly line up tenth on the grid for the start of the CARQUEST 200. A patient approach was again employed by the #22 Team while saving the tires. By lap 40 Steckly had moved into the five. He stayed in that position until late in the event when the strategy to save the tires started to pay off. On lap 153 the AW Millwrights Pontiac moved into 4th place passing three time national champion Dave Whitlock in the #98 Ford Quality Care Taurus. He then set his sights on the #88 Speedy Auto Service Taurus of Dave Jacombs. On lap 166 Steckly moved into the third position passing Jacombs who had a tire going down and eventually was forced to pit. During the final five laps Steckly gave the #1 Canadian Tire entry of Peter Gibbons a run for his money but in the end brought home a third place podium finish. An elated Steckly said after the race "We have had a good car just about every time out this year but late race incidents like getting a tire cut down in St. Eustache with five laps to go have kept us from the podium, but not today. My whole team have worked hard to get us here and my spotter just kept telling me to run smooth and easy and save the tires. I can't thank AW Millwrights, Erb Transport, Pro-Lift Service, Holloway Auto Parts, FAG Automotive and all our product supporters enough. They have all been behind us 100% and this ones for them."
Steckly's strong performance this weekend moved them up another two positions in the Eastern Super Series Point Standings to seventh,
The next event on the schedule for the #22 AW Millwrights/Erb Transport Pontiac team will be the Autopro 150 at Autodrome Chicoutimi, Chicoutimi, PQ next Sunday July 2.
