Jacombs gets back on track in CASCAR event #2.
Hamilton, Ontario: Dave Jacombs in the Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust Taurus rebounded from the bad outing at Delaware in the first round of the CASCAR Super Series to post a fourteenth place finish, at the Peterborough bullring on Sunday afternoon. The race was scheduled for Saturday night, but rain washed out qualifying before it was complete so the teams had to return on Sunday for the Logel's Auto Parts 200.
During the drivers meeting held during the rain delay, it was decided that the starting order would be based on this season's current point standings, meaning Jacombs and his Speedy Taurus would be deep in the field as they entered this event in 35th in the standings. When the cars lined up for the start Dave's Taurus was sitting in the 25th position and he knew it would take a lot of good luck and a few cautions at the start not to go down a lap early.
Jacombs ran strong in the early going, moving to as high as 15th by lap 40, when he got turned around on the track. He made a spectacular run to the start/finish line to beat race leader Robbie Thompson and not go down a lap. The Speedy Taurus then restarted deep in the field again. During a later caution, Jacombs headed down pit road to take on a new tire. CASCAR deemed that he entered pit road when it was closed and penalized him with a stop and go when the race returned to green flag conditions. Jacombs fought back all afternoon and took the checkered flag as the first car down one lap in fourteenth. This effectively has moved the Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust/FAG Automotive Taurus team up twelve positions in the point standings to twenty-third. Jacombs said after the race "It was tough fighting our way through traffic all day but at least we are taking the car home in one piece. The car was really strong at the end as I ran up front with the leaders. We just lost that lap on the stop and go otherwise maybe we would have had a top five day."
Podium finishers included 1. #17 D.J. Kennington, Castrol Intrepid 2. #22 Scott Steckly, Erb Pontiac 3. #64 Mark Dilley, NTN Bearings Taurus
The next event on the schedule for the CASCAR Super Series is event #3 at Autodrome St. Eustache just outside Montreal, PQ on Saturday June 1st.
