Jacombs strategy pays off with podium finish.
OSHAWA, Ontario: Dave Jacombs in the Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust Taurus used early race strategy to gain their first podium finish of the year -- a third at the famed Mosport Road Course. Rain soaked the entire track early in the running of the NAPA presents the Clarington 250, so Jacombs and a few other racers ducked into the pits for their rain tires. This proved to be the winning strategy for the top four of Kevin Dowler, Don Thomson Jr., Dave Jacombs and Mark Dilley as they roared through the field on the final four laps in heavy rain to post top finishes in the rain-shorted 32 lap event.
Jacombs who qualified twenty-first was going to try to save the tires and make only their mandatory fuel stop over the scheduled 64-lap event, but all that changed when rain arrived early. Jacombs was not sure if their strategy to change to rain tires was going to be the right one but on lap 27 when rain started again and a 4:30 curfew loomed it appeared they had made the right choice. The final four laps were run under very slick conditions as rain pelted down on the track. This allowed the foursome of Dowler, Thomson, Jacombs and Dilley to make their run for the front. A happy Jacombs commented after the race "I still can't believe we did it, but the rain tires worked not bad. This is the first time I have ever run on them, so I was not sure what to expect. But when the green came out on lap 28 we knew that we were under pressure due to the rain and a curfew so we just went for it. The car stuck the first time I braked into the corner so I got a little braver each time and we passed about fifteen cars on those last four laps."
The Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Exhaust/FAG Automotive/Inroble Brakes Taurus heads to the next event on the schedule, the Exide 250 at the 1/2 mile Mosport Oval, event #5 on the 2002 CASCAR Super Series Tour on Saturday June 22nd.
