Jacombs gets off to slow start in CASCAR season opener.
Hamilton, Ontario: CASCAR's Dave Jacombs, who is known for his consistency on the track had his streak of good finishes and completing the most laps shattered on Sunday in the Mopar Parts 250 at Delaware Speedway. The Speedy Taurus driver finished a very disappointing thirty-fifth after completing only eighty-seven laps due to an on-track incident with another competitor. Jacombs won the reliability award in 2001 for his completion of 1952 of a possible 1966 laps.
The #88 Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust/FAG Automotive Taurus time trialed 16th fastest of the forty-three CASCAR Super Series cars attempting to qualify and Jacombs was pleased with the effort of the entire team.
Sunday's Mopar 250 would see them start from the 16th position. By lap seventy-five Jacombs had settled into the 9th position and reported the car was working great. Unfortunately a part-time competitor got a little over anxious and pushed Jacombs into the inside wall just entering turn three. A considerable amount of damage was done and the Speedy Taurus had to be parked for the day.
A frustrated Jacombs said after the race "This incident was very uncalled for. I just let off the gas going into the corner and I think he must have been using me as his brakes. We are in this series for the twelve races and a point's championship and to be racing like this only 87 laps into a 250 lap event is just not necessary. On the bright side though the car was working really well and my team did a great job of getting it ready this weekend. We'll be ready for Peterborough and see what we can do there."
Podium finishers included: 1. #9 Robbie Thompson, Team Logel/SMP Intrepid 2. #99 Pete Vanderwyst, Exide Pontiac 3. Mark Dilley, NTN Taurus.
The next event for the #88 Speedy Auto Service Racing Team will be the second race of the season at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday May 25th.
