Gibbons wins Mopar 300

CALGARY, AB (July 26, 1998) Reigning CASCAR Castrol Super Series East champion Peter Gibbons won the Mopar 300 at Calgary's Race City Speedway on Sunday afternoon. The Canadian Tire Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver started third in the field of 35 CASCAR Late Model drivers and took the lead for the second and final time on lap 295 of the 300 lap National Super Series opener.

It was the second time that the Stouffville, ON racer has won the Mopar 300. The other time was in 1995. With today's victory, Gibbons becomes the first two-time winner of the event.

Finishing second was Windsor, ON racer Sean Dupuis. The former CASCAR champion continues to improve after some early season troubles. It was the second podium finish in the last three races for the STP / Ford Performance Parts Taurus racer.

The third and final podium finisher was Mt. Albert, ON racer Kerry Micks. Driving the Ford Fast Lane Taurus, Micks took the initial green flag in 20th position and climbed steadily throughout the race. The former CASCAR champion required physically exhausted and required medical attention after the race as he's been battling the flu.

Defending race winner Dave Whitlock (Petrolia, ON) was fourth in his Ford Quality Care Service Taurus, ahead of Jim Lapcevich (Hamilton, ON / Tim Hortons Ford Taurus).

The second round of the four-race National championship will be held next weekend in Edmonton, on a road course circuit at Edmonton's City Centre Airport.
