Turner takes fifth in rain shorted Mosport road course event.
OSHAWA, Ontario: The #76 Blue Streak Racing Team finished fifth in the 32 lap rain-shortened NAPA presents the Clarington 250 at Mosport International Raceway, Road Course on Sunday. Al Turner, who started on the front row with a strong qualifying run on Saturday, had hopes of a podium finish on this challenging road course but several rain showers and a 4:30 curfew ended their chances.
Turner qualified the Blue Streak Intrepid on the front row with a blistering time of 1:27.509. This was good enough for the pole early in the qualifying session, but a late charge by #1 Peter Gibbons saw Turner's time bested by the Canadian Tire driver, however they both beat the previous track record set by Kevin Dowler in 2001.
Rain hit the scheduled 64-lap event early and while some of the teams, and the eventual first four finishers ducked into the pits for rain tires, Turner elected to stay on the track and hope for clear skies. The strategy was paying off as the Blue Streak Intrepid remained in the top three for most of the event. After the second red flag condition for rain and a curfew time fast approaching, CASCAR elected to send the cars back onto the track to complete five more circuits. This would bring them to the halfway point and then the race could be halted and considered complete. When the green flag waved for the final time at lap 28, the conditions were slick as rain poured down on the field. Turner made a valiant effort to hold onto fifth as many of the early front-runners either went off the slick track or slowed considerably and finished back in the field.
Turner commented after the race "We had a really good car this weekend. After we led the first lap, I decided to just settle into my own groove and keep the car in one piece until later in the race. Our strategy didn't totally work for us today but a lot of teams would be happy with our fifth so we'll take it and move onto the Mosport oval next week," he added.
The Blue Streak Racing Team have unofficially moved into the top ten in the CASCAR National Point Standings heading into event five at the ½ mile Mosport Oval, next weekend on Saturday June 22.
