Turner takes second at Kawartha.
Peterborough, ON: August 17, 2002 -- The CASCAR Super Series took to the track today for event eleven of twelve at Kawartha Speedway for the Kawartha Racetrack Slots 200. Al Turner driver of the #76 Blue Streak Intrepid posted a season best second place finish behind winner and current point's leader Don Thomson Jr.
Turner's Intrepid was quick right off the trailer and posted the quickest time during practice. When the thirty-one cars were finished time trials, Turner would be scored in seventh.
The Blue Streak Intrepid driver quickly settled into seventh at the drop of the green flag and by lap 100 Turner was up to fourth. Like most of the field the Turner ducked into the pits at lap 115 when the caution and then red flag flew for a spectacular crash by Don Thomson Jr. teammate John Fitzpatrick. A shaken Fitzpatrick exited the car under his own steam and while beaten and bruised appeared to be okay. During a lightning quick pit stop the #76 team put a new right rear tire under Turner and he was set to go the distance. Two cars, Scott Steckly and Kevin Dowler elected not to pit and in the end it proved costly as they suffered tire problems late in the race. Turner and eventual third place finisher and fellow Intrepid driver Ron Beauchamp Jr. waged a terrific battle over the closing laps as they passed several cars to make it to the podium. Turner noted after the race, "This Blue Streak Intrepid was very good today and I have to thank my crew and spotter for a tremendous job. I didn't really like the car after we made the tire change but it came back to me at the end and we were able to pick off a few cars to get ourselves into second. Donnie (Thomson Jr.) had such a big lead on everyone as we ran those final 85 laps under green and we just couldn't make it up," he added.
Podium: 1. Don Thomson Jr., Home Hardware Chevrolet 2. Al Turner, Blue Streak Intrepid 3. Ron Beauchamp Jr., Mopar Intrepid
The CASCAR Super Series will now take several weeks off from the race track before heading to Delaware for the final weekend on Sept. 27/28/29 where the 100 lap qualifiers on Friday will be full point events as will Sunday's 300 lap feature.
The Blue Streak Racing Intrepid will not be idle though as they attend the Expo Uni-Select in St. Hyacinthe, PQ on Sept. 10 & 11th.
