June 18, 2000: Barrie’s Al Turner in the #76 Blue Streak Intrepid has certainly seen the highs and lows early in this CASCAR Rollin Thunder 2000 tour as he gets taken out early in the Exide 200 by an early race incident. Turner who won the first two events of the season has now been taken out early in the last two events and the result this week was a 35th place finish.
Turner who was really happy with the car during practice went on to time trial and set 9th fast time of the day. The Blue Streak Intrepid then lined up fourth for the heat race and with a strong run on the outside of competitors Dave Jacombs in the Speedy Taurus and Kerry Mix in the Fast Lane Taurus, Turner was able to take the lead and coast home to a first place finish. It was a costly win though as on the last lap a rocker arm broke and the team had major repairs to make to the motor prior to the start of the Exide 200.
With their qualifying effort Turner was set to line up 9th on the grid for the start of the 200 lap event but due to the length of time the extensive motor repairs took, they missed the mandatory autograph session and were forced to line up at the back of the 38 car field. Turner was progressing to the front with the help of his crew chief and spotter in the grandstands and was in the top twenty when disaster struck.
Starting at the rear of the field would turn out to be costly as a part time participant on the CASCAR tour decided to be to aggressive thirty four laps into a two hundred lap event and caused a crash right in front of Turner. With the track blocked and nowhere to go Turner slowed down but still slid into the car in front of him. The major damage was done when another competitor hit him hard from the rear. The resulting inspection determined that the damage was irreparable and the #76 Blue Streak Intrepid was done for the day resulting in a 35th place finish.
The #76 Blue Streak Intrepid show car will be heading to New Brunswick early as Turner will be making an appearance at REC Auto in Woodstock, New Brunswick on Thursday June 22 and then in Sussex, New Brunswick and King’s County Auto on Friday June 23rd. The next race event is the CARQUEST 200 Saturday and Sunday June 24th and 25th at New Brunswick International Speedway, Fredericton.
