Checa & Biaggi Confounded By Rain In Spain

Marlboro Yamaha Team riders Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi had an abbreviated second day of testing at Valencia today, the session cut short by poor weather. Lower-than-usual temperatures forced a late start to the day and then rain stopped testing mid-afternoon.

Nevertheless the pair were able to learn some more lessons which will contribute to furthering the development of the YZR-M1, which makes its race debut at Suzuka, Japan, six weeks tomorrow. Biaggi tested a new engine-braking control system for the first time, while Yamaha test rider John Kocinski confirmed some crucial chassis modifications.

"Conditions weren't so good today, so the riders couldn't push so hard," commented YZR-M1 project leader Ichiro Yoda. "Max tried the new engine braking system and found some positive points, though it obviously needs more work. All three riders will evaluate the system tomorrow. John tried some new chassis parts which give us the improvement in turning that we've been looking for, and Max and Carlos will soon be able to test similar modifications."

Checa completed only 24 laps before the drizzle set in shortly after lunch. "I tested some different chassis settings but the weather meant that we didn 't have time to test engine parts and the engine-braking system, it was better than nothing though," said the Spaniard.

The engine-braking unit is an electronically controlled hydraulic system designed to minimise the effects of the four-stroke's engine braking into corners. Yamaha hope that the system will particularly improve the riders' entry speed into faster corners.

"I think this system can have some good points in the future but so far it's not helping my lap times," said Biaggi, who rode 22 laps.

Checa and Biaggi continue testing at Valencia tomorrow, then move on to Estoril, Portugal, next week. During March they have sessions at Mugello, Catalunya and Suzuka before the Japanese season opener on April 7.
