Marlboro Yamaha Team Private Tests
Valencia, 7 June 2002
Day 2 of 2
Biaggi and Checa complete two-day Valencia exploration.
Marlboro Yamaha Team riders Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa completed their two-day test session at Valencia this afternoon, continuing to explore the potential of the latest YZR-M1 chassis.
The pair rode in better conditions today, though heavy overnight rain had reduced grip levels at the Spanish circuit. Lap times, however, were not top of the agenda.
"We've really explored different areas of the bike, trying a lot of different settings with the new chassis," said Checa, who completed 81 laps today. "That's why we came here - to go from one extreme of settings to the other. Also, this is the first time we've really had to properly test the upgraded engine-braking system which we raced for the first time at Le Mans. Until now, all we've done with the system is to set it up for individual tracks, rather than undertaking real experiments. I think the feedback we've given to Yamaha over the past two days will help them to further improve the system."
Biaggi, who clocked 78 laps today, was also happy with the team's latest progress. "We didn't come here to make lap times, just to look into different chassis settings which we didn't have the time to work on at Mugello," said the Italian. "I think we've both given a lot of data to Yamaha, which should help us at other circuits, not just here. Now we go to Catalunya to see how we can do there."
Marlboro Yamaha Team manager Geoff Crust will join the team in taking two days off before the crew heads to Barcelona for next weekend's Marlboro Catalan GP. "We're very satisfied with what we've done here, the lap times were a lot better than when we came here in February" said the Briton. "It's been pretty hectic for everyone because we've been flat out recently and we all came here straight from Mugello. But if that's what it takes...."
Practice and qualifying for the Marlboro Catalan GP take place on June 14/15, race day is June 16.
