Checa & Biaggi commence final preparations at Suzuka.
Marlboro Yamaha Team riders Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi were fourth and ninth quickest on the first day of this weekend's two-day IRTA group teams' test at Suzuka, the final preseason session before next weekend's much-awaited Japanese GP, the opening event of MotoGP racing's new four-stroke era.
The pair are in the initial phase of evaluating a new chassis, featuring revised balance, which Yamaha created following last month's tests in Europe. Both riders began the tests with the existing YZR-M1 chassis before switching to the new unit, allowing them to carry out a back-to-back evaluation.
"We've been focusing on getting to grips with the new chassis," said Checa. "At first we weren't quite sure which way to go with settings but we soon started to make some useful progress and then we got some better tyres at the end of the day. Tomorrow we will continue working to find the best compromise with the new parts."
Biaggi also voiced approval for the latest chassis. 'The new chassis has substantial modifications, it turns better than the last one but I'd still like the bike to turn faster," said the Italian who has been getting used to track changes at the Japanese track. "They've altered Dunlop Curve since we were last here, it's quite a bit tighter than before, so we've also been adjusting to that.'
Marlboro Yamaha Team director Davide Brivio commented: 'We've started working towards finding the best settings for the new spec. This is our first day with this latest chassis, so we've been gathering a lot of data which should help us to further improve the machine.'
Practice and qualifying for the Japanese GP take place on Friday April 5 and Saturday April 6 with racing on Sunday April 7. The event is the first of this year's 16-round MotoGP World Championship.
