Valencia MotoGP: Marquez leads FP1, Lorenzo outpaces Rossi

Outgoing MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez set the pace in opening practice for the season finale at Valencia on Friday.

The Honda rider, who survived a scare in the dying seconds, posted a best time of 1:31.250 to beat championship contender Jorge Lorenzo to the top spot by less than two tenths of a second.

Lorenzo's title rival Valentino Rossi, starting Sunday's race from the back of the grid, finished down in fifth position, over four tenths off Marquez's pace.

Dani Pedrosa was third fastest on the second works Honda, ahead of the Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso.

Pol Espargaro was sixth quickest, with Andrea Iannone, Cal Crutchlow, Aleix Espargaro and Yonny Hernandez completing the top 10.

Before a time was set in the session, Suzuki's Maverick Vinales took a tumble on his very first lap, the Spaniard returning to the pits on foot after his bike was damaged.

Vinales managed to return to the track minutes later with his spare bike.

After several riders took to the top of the times in the early moments, Marquez established himself as the quickest rider with a time of 1:31.815, a time that would remain the benchmark for several minutes.

Rossi climbed to second from sixth with 22 minutes to go, but he was demoted to third just seconds later when Lorenzo joined Marques in the 1:31s.

Pedrosa then set a new fastest time - 1:31.553 - to leap to the top, and although Marquez improved right away, he fell less than a tenth short of his teammate's time.

At the 18-minute mark, it was Lorenzo who moved to first place with a 1:31.434.

With four minutes left, Marquez outpaced his rival with a lap of 1:31.250 and Espargaro relegated Rossi to fifth place on the Tech 3 Yamaha.
