STONER AND MELANDRI CONTINUE TO IMPROVE IN LAGUNA FREE PRACTICE

With the thermometers registering just 18DEGC at the start of third free practice at Laguna Seca, and thick fog creating 86% humidity, there was little change to the proceedings on track as Casey Stoner once again set the pace. The Australian was again in unstoppable form as he lapped some four tenths of a second inside his best effort from yesterday, setting a consistently fast pace.

It was another positive session for Marco Melandri, both in terms of his lap times and the set-up work that further improved his feeling with the GP8 in race trim. The Italian was again inside the top five and he is optimistic of carrying that form into qualifying this afternoon.

CASEY STONER (Ducati MotoGP Team) 1st: 1'21.461

"The start of the session was cold and still a little foggy. From the guys who went out we could see that the lap times weren't there so we decided to stay in the garage for a while and wait until the track came up to a temperature that would give us some useable data. We actually struggled a little bit with the set-up, we couldn't quite find the right balance for the bike this morning. We weren't using the same tyres as yesterday and the conditions were really cold, so that played quite a big part, but in the end we were able to adapt the bike and set some consistent laps at the end, with a decent lap time. With the track conditions a little higher we should be in good shape. My target for qualifying is a place on the front row."

MARCO MELANDRI (Ducati MotoGP Team) 5th: 1'22.758

"I'm really happy to have finally had the kind of weekend we should be having this season. We've managed to make continual improvements with the set-up in each session and my feeling has got gradually better. This morning the conditions weren't quite as good as yesterday and both the lap times and the set-up improved, so I'm quite confident about qualifying this afternoon. When you have a good feel on race tyres this usually carries over onto a qualifier. We'll see - I really hope to do well this afternoon and in the race tomorrow."
