Smith tops rain-hit Barcelona MotoGP test

Bradley Smith topped a rain-hit MotoGP test at the Barcelona circuit on Monday following the Catalan Grand Prix.

A heavy thunderstorm and showers hit the track at midday, altering the teams' programmes and making others call it a day early.

Race winner Jorge Lorenzo and Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi, who were scheduled to test new parts today, decided not to test as the conditions were too poor to make their time comparable with those of the previous days.

Tech 3 Yamaha rider Smith led the way with a best time of 1:42.018, set before the rain hit the circuit.

The Briton finished ahead of the Suzukis of Maverick Vinales and Aleix Espargaro, both continuing to show good pace after a promising weekend.

World champion Marc Marquez went fourth fastest after running in the opening 90 minutes of the session, before the rain arrived.

Teammate Dani Pedrosa, third in Sunday's race, was sixth quickest today, the Honda duo split by Yonny Hernandez on the Pramac Ducati.
