After a promising Czech Republic Grand Prix, Repsol YPF Honda¹s three riders were once again regular top runners in the first qualifying practice session for the Portuguese Grand Prix. Tadayuki Okada just missed out on the provisional front row with fifth time, one place in front of World Champion Alex Criville. Sete Gibernau set the eighth fastest time today.

TADY OKADA 5th 1'42.255 "Things are much better for us but to be honest, I don¹t really know why! It's been the case so many times this year that our results haven¹t been so good while all the satellite Honda teams were doing well. But today, it's the opposite way around and this is a bit of a surprise for us. We don¹t really know why the situation is like this. What I do know is that I¹m feeling a lot more comfortable on the bike today. We tested at Brno, after the Grand Prix, and we were able to refine our suspension settings and find something that seems to work very well. And now, for the first time this year, I feel like I¹m really having fun out there on the bike".

ALEX CRIVILLE 6th 1'42.259 "We¹re very close and that¹s good. I¹m in sixth place and only four tenths off pole. The wind has been our main problem today. It's extremely strong and it means that some laps are ruined. You might be doing okay for half a lap but then you get caught by the wind and suddenly, you lose time where you don¹t expect to. But I¹m happy. We have another practice session tomorrow and the bike is already working well. Without the danger factor from the wind, everything would be okay".

SETE GIBERNAU 8th 1'42.335 "We¹re working in the same way as we did at the last Grand Prix, concentrating on one bike and working on making the feeling as good as possible. Since this morning, I've been experiencing problems with my front brake but we haven¹t had time to change the brake yet. But we know what we have to do to improve the bike for tomorrow. We have to change the front brake system, obviously, but also work on the rear suspension. The engine is working fine so that's something we shouldn¹t have to worry about".
