The tenth round of the 250cc Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix (MOTOGP) took place at Brno, Czech Republic with the presence of Sebastian Porto driving the Honda 250 RSW. The Argentinian arrived fifth in the race dominated by Aprilia with the French Randy de Puniet in first place followed by Toni Elías and Manuel Poggiali.
The activity started on friday along with the problems for Porto. On saturday the Argentinian continued complicated with the tires (same problem of Sachsenring, three weeks ago) and the set up of his bike. The tenth position was a clear sample of the situation. The worst qualifying session for Porto since South Africa GP 2002 when he was 12th. with the Yamaha of the Sprinta Petronas Team.
On sunday in a fantastic sunny day 45.000 people took the Brno circuit with the expectative of live a great race in the three categories: Moto GP, 250cc and 125cc.
¨Friday was a complicate day, and on saturday we did some changes, but we couldn`t improve in the set up in the qualifying. It didn`t help the red flag neither because I couldn`t set a good time¨, commented Porto on saturday.
The 250cc. race started with Poggiali in the pole position, but quickly Elías passed him and took the leadership, but only for a short moment. The changes in the leadership were a constant during the race between Elías, De Puniet and Poggiali.
Porto did a great move and advanced from tenth to seventh in the very first curve.
The Argentinian had a calm race without the problems in the tires and the genereal balance in the bike he suffered before.
In the dispute for the first place the 14 curves of the circuit were an opprtunity to make a move and jump or loose a place.
The rhythm of competition was to high during the 20 laps. The breaks in the fastest lap of the race were continue: Porto (in lap 3), Rolfo, Nieto and Poggiali marked at least one time the fastest lap. De Puniet did it four times and Elías three with the fastest lap of all the race with 2'03.969.
The French was the driver with more time in the front with 8 laps, Poggiali led 7 and Elías 5.
Roberto Rolfo, the other factory Honda driver and who took his first victory three weeks ago at Sachsenring completed a good race finishing fourth as the best Honda driver. However the Italian couldn`t follow the high level of the three Aprilias.
All the race Porto had an interesting fight with Fonsi Nieto for the fifth place. The rhythm constant and regular of the Argentinian allow him to pass the Spanish a couple of laps before the end. A great move like Porto knows: Wait the right moment.
¨I`m happy with today`s result, although we had some problems, the bike wasn`t 100% and it was a hard race. I tried to attack since the begining and I could be more faster, but the bike put me a limit. We have a big problem in the front part, we can`t make it work right and now we must improve before the next race¨
The last lap was just amazing in the argued for the leadership. Poggiali led, then Elías did, but it was De Puniet who passed them and took a fantstic victory. With 22 years and 75 races in the World Championship this was his second time in highest place in the podium and in his carreer in the category.
The championship continue very close. Poggiali is still on top with 145 points, while Nieto is second at 136 and Rolfo, third, with 135. De Puniet is fourth with 130 points. Elías, Battaini, West and Porto (with 98) complete the top eight positions.
Despite after tenth rounds he couldn`t even take a podium with the Honda, Sebastián will continue in the fight: ¨I`m motivated. We are already working for the next year, moving looking for a big sponsor because I want to fight the championship in 2004¨, said Porto. He has the talent, no doubt.
