Marquez says tyre selection "key" to Argentina hopes

Marc Marquez believes that choosing the correct tyre compounds to use in this weekend's Argentina MotoGP race will be "key" to his hopes of a strong result.

Tyre selection played a major role in the Qatar season-opener, as the leading riders took diverging choices when it came to choosing the best Michelins to cover a race distance.

Jorge Lorenzo said after the race that a last-minute change to a softer compound of rear tyre proved instrumental in his victory, while Valentino Rossi questioned if he had made the wrong choice.

Marquez, who finished third behind Andrea Dovizioso in Qatar, highlighted the importance of selecting the correct rubber for the Termas de Rio Hondo track this weekend.

"Normally last year everyone chooses the same tyres, but in Qatar there were many different options – me and Valentino on hard/hard, Jorge with hard/soft, Dovizioso with soft/soft," said Marquez.

"It will be important to find the best tyre in practice, because it's the key.

"In Qatar, in the last laps Jorge was able to improve his lap times, to do a 1m54s, which was really fast, so we will try to understand and choose the best one."

Rossi echoed Marquez's sentiment, pointing out his choice of using an extra-rear hard tyre in last year's Argentinian race was crucial to being able to catch his rival to win the race.

"The choice of tyres is more open, in the first group [of riders in Qatar] there were a lot of different choices, so we must make sure we make the right choice on Sunday," said the Italian.

"The race [last year] was very good because I start with the extra-hard rear, I had a good pace and step-by-step I overtook the guys ahead to arrive in second place.

"At that moment Marc was quite far [ahead], he had a good advantage, so it was difficult to catch him, but the bike worked well with the hard rear, so I could arrive and start the battle."
