CONFIDENCE REMAINS HIGH AT MARC VDS
Scott Redding was 21st fastest during today's opening free practice session at Brno, with Hector Faubel finishing less than a second adrift of his Marc VDS teammate in 32nd position. Both riders are confident of significant improvements in their lap times tomorrow, as they continue work to refine the set-up of their Suter MMX Moto2 machines.
Redding struggled throughout the session with rear traction issues, losing time out of each of the Brno circuit's 14 corners as the rear tyre started spinning up under acceleration. The British teenager's crew will make changes to the rear of his bike tonight, as well as switching to the latest version of the Suter MMX chassis, which is predicted to improve rear traction further.
Faubel and his crew made big changes to the set-up of his Moto2 machine ahead of today's session, in a bid to improve the feeling for the rider and also to increase the Spaniard's confidence in the bike. Following the hour-long session, Faubel declared himself happy with the progress made and, although disappointed with his final lap time, confident that this could be improved with further changes to the set-up of the bike tomorrow.
Today's opening free practice session was held in dry conditions, but rain has been forecast to arrive at the Brno circuit sometime tomorrow afternoon, meaning qualifying could well be held in the wet.
Scott Redding #45: 21st - 2'06.105
"I got stuck in the 2'06s bracket this afternoon and didn't seem to be able to improve. Rear traction is a big issue for us here, especially with the second of the two tyres we tried today. There just didn't seem to be any edge grip and we need to sort this out ready for tomorrow. The team will make some changes to the rear of the bike to try and improve things, but we'll also switch to the latest version of the Suter chassis tomorrow, as this looks like it could offer some advantages also. It's disappointing I wasn't able to improve today, but I'm confident we'll go better tomorrow."
Hector Faubel #55: 32nd - 2'06.933
"We've made a lot of changes to the bike and this has improved the feeling considerably. My confidence has increased with every lap today, so I'm happy about that. Obviously I'm not happy with the lap time, but I am confident this will come tomorrow. We will make some further small changes to the bike ahead of the second free practice session then it will just be a case of full gas and trying for fast lap times. This way of working is good for me and I hope we will see some big improvements tomorrow."
Pete Benson: Scott Redding's Crew Chief
"The first tyre we tried today was better than the second, which didn't have the same level of edge grip. To improve rear traction tomorrow we'll be changing the rear suspension settings overnight, but we'll also switch to the revised Suter chassis, which should offer some improvement in terms of drive out of the turns. We'll see how we go from there for tomorrow afternoon's qualifying session."
