Vinales matched but couldn't better Lorenzo's early-session benchmark of 1m39.433s, the Ducati rider setting the pace in a session for the first time since his switch from Yamaha.

Lorenzo, who will start the race from the middle of the third row, was quickest from the off in the warm-up run, heading the pack with a 1m39.579s after his first effort.

That became a 1m39.433s a lap later, while his third effort ended up 0.011s slower.

The Ducati man's benchmark was unmatched until the halfway point in the 20-minute session, although Vinales got close, first lapping 0.035s slower and then closing the gap to just 0.006s.

The Yamaha rider's final improvement came with nine minutes to go, as he equalled Lorenzo's effort - and while he looked on pace to go faster on several occasions after that, he couldn't find more laptime.

Behind Vinales and Lorenzo was the lead Honda of LCR privateer Cal Crutchlow, 0.140s off, as the Japanese marque missed out on the top spot in a practice session for the first time this weekend.

Fellow Honda privateer Jack Miller (Marc VDS) was just 0.008s off former teammate Crutchlow, with Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro and Aspar Ducati's Alvaro Bautista making up the top six.

Honda works riders Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez, who decided pole between themselves on Saturday, were seventh and eighth respectively, followed by the Pramac Ducati of Scott Redding and the factory Yamaha of Valentino Rossi.
