German racer Alex Hofmann will take Sete Gibernau`s position on the Marlboro Ducati team after the accident the Spaniard suffered in the start of the Catalunyan GP last Sunday that forced him to miss the coming A-Style TT Assen Grand Prix, in Holland, for the eighth round of the Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix (MotoGP).
Hofmann`s place in Premac d`Antin will be filled by Spaniard rider Ivan Silva, already racing for the Team of Luis d'Antin in the Extreme category of the Spanish Championship and who also did a race for the team in the 2006 World Championship Superstock 1000 class.
Gibernau`s condition after the accident with his teammate Loris Capirossi -- who is at home now recovering to take part in the Dutch TT -- and Marco Melandri, left Gibernau with the most complicated injuries.
The Spanish rider today underwent a further brain scan to rule out any possible complications for the operation to fix the minor fracture to his left collarbone, scheduled for late morning today. Surgeons will replace a plate inserted following an earlier accident with a larger plate. Only after this operation will it be possible to confirm when Gibernau can race again, but he will certainly miss the next round in Assen.
This situation gave Hofmann an important opportunity of being named to race the factory Ducati Desmosedici GP06 with Bridgestone tyres.
"I'm excited and so happy! Having the possibility to race on the Official Ducati Desmosedici is an unbelievable opportunity and I will give my 100% to take advantage of it the most I can. I know this motorcycle well, I also know the evolution level of the Bridgestone tyres that I developed until the Valencia GP of the 2005 Championship, with which I had a good feeling that I hope to get back from the first laps I will make in Assen. I'm very motivated and I want to make something good", commented the 26 year-old rider.
"I also have a special thought for Sete Gibernau to whom I wish to get well at the soonest and in the best way possible", he added.
Since his debut in MotoGP in 2002 season, Hofmann disputed 42 races taking an eighth place in British Grand Prix of last year as his best result.
Melandri's physical condition is improving and this morning he left the General Hospital of Catalunya in Sant Cugat, in Barcelona, where he underwent treatment and CAT scans for a dislocation of the acromion-clavicular and mild concussion.
The Italian moved to Assen where he will wait his evolution and decide along the doctors either to race or not in next weekend's Grand Prix.
"Thanks to the therapies I feel better. I'm recovering and yesterday I could make a short walk. This morning Doctor Costa of Clinica Mobile has reached me in Barcelona and together we flew to Amsterdam and then to Assen by train. My neck hurts a lot and I think this will be the main problem. Anyway the final decision will be taken later on before the first day of practices", Melandri explained.
