Tadayuki Okada scored an encouraging fifth position in today¹s German Grand Prix. Okada started the race tenth on the grid but worked his way up to fight with the leading group. When Loris Capirossi went off the track on the last lap, Okada was there to take full advantage. His team-mate Sete Gibernau ended the race three places further down in eight while Alex Crivillé crashed out as he was dicing with Dutchman V.D. Goorbergh.
Alex Crivillé DNF 17¹06.088 World Championship Position: 7th 88 Pts.
"It¹s a shame the race turned out like this for me. I was fifth in this morning¹s warm-up and I have to say that I was feeling a lot more comfortable on the bike today. But as I was starting from the fourth row, I didn¹t want to take too many risks. I took it easy for the first few laps. Then, Valentino Rossi came past me and I followed him. We were able to close the gap on the others until we came up against Sete. Rossi overtook him and I wanted to do the same quickly because Sete was holding me up. But I was unable to pass him straight away and then, in a left hand corner, I felt something touch the rear of the bike and before I knew it, I was down."
Tadayuki Okada 5th 43¹56.306 World Championship Position: 10th 65 Pts.
"For the last ten laps, I had a problem with the tyres. The rear was sliding a lot. I think that the match between the suspension and the tyre wasn¹t very good on my bike today. I was still going quite well and I managed to catch the leading group. But passing anybody, that was a different story and I wasn¹t able to. I sat there until Loris Capirossi went wide and helped me make up another place. It¹s not a bad result but to be honest, it feels like my season¹s only just starting. I won¹t have much time off during the break because next week-end I¹m racing at the Suzuka 8 hours and after that, I have other obligations which will keep me busy."
Sete Gibernau 8th 44¹08.549 World Championship Position: 15th 41 Pts.
"I got a good start. But for the race I was using a different tyre than the one I had selected after practice because the weather was different and it was hotter today than it has been all week-end. That meant I didn¹t really feel comfortable with that tyre to start with. Still, I think we can safely say that we¹re in the right direction now and that we¹ve made good progress. We¹re closer to the front guys than we were. My bike worked better today but we still have a handling problem, especially going into the turn and in the changes of direction. So we have to keep working.".
