WHO BROUGHT THE ENGLISH WEATHER OVER HERE!!!?
(Mind you it is sunny and very hot in Milton Keynes today!!!)
The sky was covered by thick cloud and had rain in the morning here in Sachsenring.
The very first free practice session for Tekkyu to ride the 500 cc bike started on the wet surface which was not too bad, but we knew it would eventually be dry afterwards.
However, it was very cold, the temperature was only 13 Celsius, we needed to wear jackets to walk around.
Especially poor Tekkyu who flew out from Japan on Tuesday that was in the hot summer climate he totally shrank up with cold.
His first day on the 500 cc bike was somewhat bitter. On the very third lap he slid down at the third corner, he pushed the bike to start up the engine and once done he could manage to come back to his pit-box.
Fortunately the damage on the bike was not too serious, but mechanics still needed half an hour to let Tekkyu go back on the track.
This resulted him for much less laps than we all were hoping to but his lap time went quicker almost lap by lap so we will be able to achieve better result in the afternoon.
Wrapped up Tekkyu speaks.....
I am shocked! I just slid down and was deeply upset about it. This 500 cc bike is a lot heavier than I expect. We have not found the suitable setting yet so we will see!
Hideki Omori, The Chief Mechanic commented......
He did slide down but he rode the remaining session alright I believe. It is important how many laps on dry condition we would be able to have really. His style and preference is very different from Konny's, we will adjust to the right setting for Tekkyu.
Friday 1st QF
NOT SO BAD, HE IS STILL LEARNING
After the morning session we had rain again during the lunch break.
Tekkyu enjoyed pasta lunch hoping the drier condition in the afternoon, he is allegedly keen on bread more than any food. Strange boy!
Tekkyu's First Qualifying Practice started on the slightly delayed schedule due to the delay of 125 cc session. The temperature was still very low as 14 Celsius.
He knew he needed to learn a lot about the circuit first, he ran behind McWilliams and marked 1. 29 then 1. 28. Few adjustment works in the pit-box made on his bike, then he ran behind Nobu Aoki next and he marked 1. 27' 7", his best time so far.
When the clock showed that it was ten minutes to go, he changed both tyres to get more grip on the track and went back on. He let well fast Rossi pass him and also Tady, Tekkyu then followed Tady around and in few laps he went quicker and quicker to 1. 27' 048" and had the chequered flag.
He had been looking serious which was fair enough for his first appearance in the GP outside Japan but he could at least smile after this session. He knew he would need more laps and experience on this bike and the track, he is still behind some seconds slower but he is getting quicker which is the main thing.
Tekkyu with a bit relaxed smile on his face shouts!
Hey! Guys are well quick! But I am enjoying. There is still 3 seconds gap to Jurgen (vd Goorbergh on the same TSR V twin bike)! I felt I was in nowhere in the morning session today but now I can see, a lot better. Tomorrow I am hoping to do 1. 24s! I now know where on the track 4 cylinder bikes go slow. Some places they were really slow I thought. Anyway I have to have as many more laps as possible, I guess this is how I can shorten my lap time. Come on!
Hideki Omori, the Chief Mechanic thinks.....
After this session and from what we already gained it now looks that how much experience Tekkyu gets on this track would be the key thing to go quicker. If the weather remains fine he will go further. We can expect a good race I think.
