Andrea Dovizioso again set the fastest time in the second free practice session for the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello for Ducati.
Track temperatures were much warmer than this morning’s session, and Valentino Rossi set the early pace in the 45-minute session on his factory Yamaha on 1m48.460s.
That benchmark was soon eclipsed by teammate – and recent form man – Jorge Lorenzo, who unleashed a ferocious series of quick laps: 1m48.098s, then 1m48.035s and a 1m47.966s.
On his second run, Lorenzo lowered the P1 time to 1m47.852s, just before Honda's Marc Marquez hit his sweet spot and beat him with 1m47.776 and then a 1m47.643s.
Dovizioso was only fifth after his first run, four tenths off the laptime he achieved this morning, and saved his best run until the end of the session.
Running the medium-compound rear tyre, he started with 1m47.668s, just 0.025s off Marquez, then produced a 1m47.479s.
Marquez stayed second, ahead of Lorenzo. Bradley Smith leapt to fifth in the closing moments on his Tech 3 Yamaha, just behind the second Ducati of Andrea Iannone.
Cal Crutchlow was sixth on his LCR Honda, ahead of Aleix Espargaro (Suzuki) and Scott Redding's Honda.
Rossi was only ninth fastest, ploughing into the gravel at the first corner at the end of the session.
Eugene Laverty was the session’s only true casualty, crashing out at the final corner with 15 minutes remaining.
Aleix Espargaro, soldiering on despite a nasty hand injury from his Le Mans crash, had a brief trip to the gravel, but emerged unscathed.
It was a disappointing session for Dani Pedrosa, who languished in 13th on his factory Honda.
