LCR Honda rider Cal Crutchlow says Marc Marquez is "making the difference" after the Spaniard's latest stunning qualifying performance at Circuit of the Americas that brought him his fourth pole position at the track.
Marquez has won every MotoGP held in Austin thus far, and satellite Honda star Crutchlow says the Honda only has the potential of front-running pace “with him on it”.
“Dani [Pedrosa] says that he’s making it all under brakes, but he’s making it everywhere – it’s not even worth looking at,” said Crutchlow. “Honestly, you look at the data, you might as well throw it in the bin. You’re just looking at a load of squiggly lines. It’s just ridiculous.
“Not that we never went that fast last year, but he had that margin then when he wanted to. He’s riding incredibly well, for what he’s on and what he’s got, he’s seriously impressive. What can you say?
“I don’t think he could get away with some of the things with another manufacturer, but he’d still be as fast. The way he pushes the bike, he finds the limit in practice. He knows what he’s doing.
“There’s nothing positive for me, because you look at the laptime and say ‘this is f*cking ridiculous’. You know, that’s in a funny way, because you just know it’s him.”
Strong qualifying run
Crutchlow hit his target of qualifying on the second row, and is looking to bounce back after crashes in both races so far this season, despite struggling with a cold rear tyre after a slow out-lap.
“I’m losing everything at the first exit,” he said. “We just need to be patient and be prepared for a long and difficult race tomorrow. With our bike at the moment, we’re fighting a lot with it.
“We have everything at our disposal from Honda when we need it. Parts? Maybe not. But we have two guys from them – and we work together. I have no complaints.”
