The expected three-way battle for pole between Casey Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa took place in Barcelona today with the surprise addition of Randy De Puniet, who topped the time sheets for a large percentage of the hour-long qualifying practice. The push for times intensified in the final ten minutes with Lorenzo finally seal the front spot on the grid although with less of a gap to his closest rivals, which augurs well for a closer race tomorrow.

Héctor Barberá had a small fright this morning when he ran wide in turn ten into the gravel although he managed to avoid the crash and was able to The Páginas Amarillas rider worked relentlessly to chip tenths off his best lap and his efforts paid off on his penultimate lap, when he clocked his best time. Héctor has improved by more than a second and a half on his first day here and was just 1.37 seconds off pole, so further improvement tomorrow should put him in the running for a good result in front of his home crowd.

13th Héctor Barberá 1.43.417 (21 laps):

"I'm happy because the second day went a little better than they first. We have found a much more reliable set-up which allows me to be more comfortable on the bike. Even though I finished thirteenth this is the closest I have been to pole, and I think I have room for more improvement in a couple of sections, especially T2, so we'll be trying our best to do that tomorrow. The team are giving me a lot of support and they're working really hard, thanks to which I am gaining confidence with the front end, which is my weak point at the moment. I haven't worked much on my rhythm because we have been trying so many things so I honestly don't know how well I can do tomorrow -- we still have the warm-up to try and improve and after that we'll see."
