SUMMER ARRIVES FOR PRACTICE IN BARCELONA
Barcelona, 8 June: The opening day of free practice for Sunday's Catalunya Grand Prix was conducted in near perfect summer weather today, with Honda LCR rider Carlos Checa setting the 11th fastest time. Checa was one of 12 riders within one second of the best time posted by Valentino Rossi in a closely contested session at the Montmelo circuit.
However Checa's disposition was not as sunny as the weather with the Spaniard hoping to be much more competitive at his home race. After a detailed debrief meeting with crew chief Ramon Forcada, Checa is hoping for a step forward in set-up options for tomorrow's qualifying session.
CHECA: Eleventh overall - 1'43.866
CHECA: "I am far away from where I should be, even though the times are quite close I would prefer to be much closer to the front. It has not been an easy day, we need to find some solutions and a better direction in which to be faster. Hopefully the good weather will continue and I can work with the team, Honda and Michelin to improve our performance tomorrow."
In 250cc qualifying Irish rider Eugene Laverty recovered from an off-track excursion following an incident with Alvaro Bautista which cost him valuable track time. Laverty is confident of going faster tomorrow.
LAVERTY: "I don't understand why Bautista chopped across me under brakes, he was going 20 kph faster anyway, so this wasn't necessary for him to pass me. I hit the rear of his bike and was forced off the track. We found a good rear tyre this afternoon and a better front set-up, plus the clutch problems from Mugello are fixed, so I'm confident about tomorrow".
