With an increasing chance of rain hitting the track during the afternoon's race, Marquez started the warm-up with a lap on wet tyres, and then practiced a bike swap in the pits.

Early on in the session, Jorge Lorenzo was in a league of his own, as he had a significant lead with a time of 1m56.273s.

Several riders held second in the following minutes as they closed the gap to the Ducati rider, Marquez falling only 0.017s short with 10 minutes on the clock.

But it was eventually Lorenzo's factory Ducati teammate Dovizioso who demoted the Spaniard five minutes later with a 1m56.177s, and the pair ended the session first and second.

Honda's Marquez and Cal Crutchlow followed suit with Maverick Vinales ending up fifth as the fastest Yamaha.

Suzuki man Andrea Iannone ran wide and had a tumble at Turn 5 but still took sixth, followed by Tech 3 Yamaha's Hafizh Syahrin, and the Italian's teammate Alex Rins.

Pramac Ducati's Jack Miller beat Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) by half a tenth for ninth.

Dani Pedrosa (Honda) was 12th with top-eight starters Johann Zarco (Tech 3) and Danilo Petrucci (Pramac) taking only 15th and 16th respectively.

Alvaro Bautista (Nieto Ducati) fell at Turn 10, while Pol Espargaro crashed at the third corner, the KTM rider taken to the medical centre as a result.
