Sete Gibernau gave the Repsol YPF team it's best result today by finishing 7th, but only after Tadayuki Okada surprised everyone with a lightning start and led the first lap. But Okada soon found himself dealing with suspension problems and eventually finished 9th. Alex Crivillé was 11th and surrendered his world title to Suzuki's Kenny Roberts today.
SETE GIBERNAU 7th 45'30.884 World Championship Position: 14th 68 Pts.
"My start was okay but then I got hit by Alex and the impact really hurt my leg. Then, still in the first lap, Biaggi nearly ran off the track and hit me as well so I ended up losing a lot of time in that first lap. After that, I just tried to focus on getting a good pace and working my way up unto a good position. My bike was working well and that's what allowed me to do some good lap times, almost as fast as the leaders. Without those first lap incidents, I feel sure that I could have been fighting for the top positions today".
TADY OKADA 9th 45'40.130 World Championship Position: 12th 94 Pts.
"I made the perfect start! But it sure didn't feel like that to me at the time. I was certain I'd made a mistake and I would be penalised for jumping the start. But the time between the red and the green lights was too long. It wasn't normal. I think it surprised many people. After that it was hard for me to stay with the others because the front suspension was giving me problems. It just wasn't flowing over the bumps. It was more like the bike was hitting the bumps. That meant I couldn't leant it over as far as I wanted to. I was having to lift the bike up a little and I couldn't get my lap times as low as I wanted them".
ALEX CRIVILL É 11th 45'51.426 World Championship Position: 9th 112 Pts.
"My start wasn't good and on the first lap, I hit Sete. Once I got going again I started passing some other riders until I came up against Aoki. I kind of lost my pace behind him and found it hard to get by him. By the time I found a way past, the front guys were already a long way away. For the rest of the race I rode alone but I nearly lost the front on several occasions so I opted to play it safe and just concentrate on finishing the race. We didn't have the right set-up today. The change to the 16.5 inch tyre hasn't been easy for us".
