MotoE race simulation in Valencia won by Granado
Jun 19, 2019, 8:27 AM

Former grand prix racer Eric Granado fended off poleman Hector Garzo to win a practice MotoE World Cup race at Valencia.

MotoE held its first qualifying simulation on Tuesday at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit using a superpole format, which Garzo topped on the Tech 3 machine by 0.025 seconds over Granado.

However, in the seven-lap practice race held on Wednesday morning, Garzo was unable to convert that into victory.

After a last-lap duel, it was Avintia rider Granado that emerged on top, taking the chequered flag by 1.004s from Garzo, while also claiming the fastest lap of the race with a 1m40.113s.

Former World Supersport and Moto2 rider Niki Tuuli completed the top three on the sole Ajo machine, trailing Garzo by eight tenths of a second.

A further 0.8s adrift came 2011 125cc world champion Nico Terol, who guided his Angel Nieto bike fourth ahead of Gresini rider Matteo Ferrari.

Avintia's Xavier Simeon crossed the line sixth, though only just prevailing against Mattia Casadei on the SIC58 Squadra Corse machine by 0.049s.

Mike di Meglio (Marc VDS), Pramac's Alex De Angelis and Niccolo Canepa on the LCR bike completed the top 10, while the series only female competitor Maria Herrera was 12th on the second Nieto machine.

Nine-time MotoGP race winner Sete Gibernau completed the top 15, after Gresini's Lorenzo Savadori snatched 14th by 0.066s from the Pons rider.

LCR's Randy de Puniet, who crashed heavily twice during the MotoE test this week, was the only non-finisher.

Bradley Smith, who qualified his SIC machine fourth for the practice race (pictured below), was absent due to Aprilia MotoGP testing commitments in Barcelona today.

The inaugural MotoE World Cup round will take place in just three weeks' time during the German Grand Prix round at the Sachsenring.
