Jerez Moto2: Lowes beats Folger and Cortese to pole
Moto2 championship leader Sam Lowes narrowly prevailed over Jonas Folger and Sandro Cortese to top the qualifying session at Jerez.
For most of the session, it was a German 1-2 out front, with Folger leading Cortese by just 0.003s.
And Folger's benchmark of 1m42.436s, set early on, stood until there were only five minutes left on the clock, when Lowes went quicker by 0.003s as well.
The Briton improved by another two hundredths with his next effort, wrapping up his second pole of the season as none of his fellow frontrunners managed to go any quicker.
Folger settled for second, ahead of Cortese and Franco Morbidelli, the top four split by 0.072s.
Thomas Luthi took fifth, ahead of Lorenzo Baldassarri, Austin winner Alex Rins and Simone Corsi.
Alex Marquez took ninth, with Luis Salom in 10th.
It was a miserable session for reigning champion Johann Zarco, who could only lap 16th-quickest and will share row six with another regular frontrunner Dominique Aegerter.
