NATIONAL/16TH STREET/SPEEDROME MIDGET SERIES STEWART TAKES RICH CHARLOTTE MIDGET RACE, PARISH TOPS SPEEDROME LINCOLN, BELLEVILLE UP NEXT FOR NATIONAL MIDGET SERIES
Tony Stewart of Rushville, Ind. captured Friday night's $51,000 National Midget race at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway and plans to compete in this Saturday night's $71,000 Miller Genuine Draft "Belleville Midget Nationals" at the Belleville (Kans.) High Banks. Stewart led all 50 laps of the race on Charlotte's 1/4-mile paved legends oval in the Wynn's/ASE/Performance Racing Industry/Beast Pink Ford to claim the $9,000 winner's share of the richest single-day Midget purse in the 66-year history of the sport.
The National and "Western States" Midget series visit Eagle Raceway in Lincoln, Neb. this Tuesday night (July 28) for the "Mid-Summer Midget Classic," then head for the Belleville 1/2-mile dirt for the "Nationals" Thursday through Saturday. A 40-lapper is on tap at Lincoln, while 20-lapper are scheduled at Belleville Thursday and Friday prior to Saturday's 40-lap finale.
Practice starts at 6:30 p.m. at Lincoln, followed by qualifying at 7 and racing at 8. The Belleville activities get under way with pits opening at 5:30 p.m. each night. Complete prelims are slated each prior to the feature events.
Stewart was trailed to the checkered flag at Charlotte by Ryan Newman, Jimmy McCune, Dave Steele and A.J. Davis, while series point leaders Jay Drake, Jason Leffler and Ricky Shelton all encountered problems in the 50-lapper. Drake eventually finished 10th, while Shelton and Leffler were 14th and 17th respectively. Drake leads Leffler by six points, with Drake's teammate, Shelton, just 26 out of the lead going into this week's four races.
Robbie Parish of Knightstown, Ind. led the final 17 laps of Thursday night's 50-lapper at the Indianapolis Speedrome for his first victory of the season. He was trailed by Tim Mehner and Norm Young as Speedrome point leader was competing in Charlotte. Lang continues to lead the Speedrome standings going into this Thursday night's program at the Indianapolis oval.
