Large Crowd, Great Racing Highlights Rayovac Showdown

SUN PRAIRIE, WI---For the first time in the 55 year year history of Angell Park Speedway, the USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series, appeared with the Badger Midget Series, before a packed grandstand, and pit area, for the Rayovac sponsored Show down at the Prairie.

Forty nine midgets, and twenty seven sprint cars participated in the events, with a special pit area constructed outside turn four for the sprint cars. Most sprint car team arrived just in time for practice, after competing the previous night at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

With a $50,000 bonus to any driver winning both features, ten drivers performed double duty: Dave Darland, Tony Elliott, Kevin Doty, Cory Kruseman, J.J. Yeley, Jerry Coons Jr., Jay Drake, Critter Malone, Tracy Hines, and Tim Cox. Of the group only Dtoy, Drake, and Coons had previous wins at the track, and in USAC competition.

Darland's victory in the Midget feature, came in his first start at the facility. The last driver to win his first night racing at the track was cary Faas in 1993. The last time Darland's car owner Steve Lewis appeared at the track also marked a win, with Jason Leffler picking up honors on July 4, 1999.

For Hewiit the win tied him with Larry Dickson for second on the all-time USAC Sprint Win list, with 45 victories. Tom Bigelow ranks first with 52 wins, and was in attendance at the event. Others spotted in the pits included: Tony George, Ken Schrader, and former Indy 500 starter Duane Swenney.

For Darland, and Dan Boorse, their top runs helped them extend their series point leads. Darland's second place finish helped him to extend his point lead over Tony Elliott. While Boorse in quest of a seventh career Badger Crown, used his sixth place finish to stretch his lead over Davey Ray.

Many executives, and over four hundred employess of Rayovac attended the event. The companies world headquarters are located in Madison, WI.
