TULSA, Okla. (October 19, 2004) - Steve Kinser will try to put one more feather in his famed racing cap when he makes a return to the O'Reilly Chili Bowl Midget Nationals at Tulsa Expo Raceway this January 5-8, 2005.
Slated for the Wednesday night, January 5, qualifying session aboard one of the potent Keith Kunz Motorsports entries, it will be Kinser's first Chili Bowl appearance since 1999, when he finished 17th. Kinser will be teamed with 20-year-old son Kraig Kinser, who will be among the 2005 Chili Bowl rookie crop, and 2001 Chili Bowl champion Jay Drake.
The coveted Golden Driller trophy has proven elusive to Kinser, who is just a handful of races away from collecting his 19th World of Outlaws sprint car championship. With more than 500 World of Outlaws feature wins, Kinser has managed top-three finishes in Chili Bowl action on three occasions however, the most recent being in 1994.
Kinser first competed in the indoor midget classic during the 4th Annual Chili Bowl in 1990, finishing second to Johnny Heydenreich. Kinser also posted Chili Bowl podium finishes in 1991 and 1994, finishing third on both occasions. Kinser chased Lealand McSpadden and Sammy Swindell to the line in '91, then took the checkered behind Andy Hillenburg and Stevie Reeves in '94.
Kinser will try to add his name to the prestigious list of Chili Bowl winners that includes Sammy Swindell (1989, '92, '96, '98), Cory Kruseman (2000 and 2004), Dan Boorse (1999 and 2003), Tony Stewart (2002), Jay Drake (2001), Billy Boat (1997), Donnie Beechler (1995), Andy Hillenburg (1994), Dave Blaney (1993), Lealand McSpadden (1991), Johnny Heydenreich (1990), Scott Hatton (1988) and Rich Vogler (1987).
