PLACERVILLE, CA (4-24-99)- The 1999 Thunder in the Foothills championship racing season will continue into it's second consecutive week of action this Saturday, April 24 at Alan Padjen's Placerville Speedway. With the sprint car division competing in Petaluma for the Civil War Series, Saturday's Hoosier Tires, Budweiser, Coors Light RC Cola event looks to be far from lack luster as five divisions will take to the 1/4 mile clay oval. While the Pro Stock and Pure Stocks will be on hand for their second championship point race of the young season, they will be joined by the Midget Lites of the Bay Cities Racing Association, Mini-Sprints from throughout Northern California and the Northern Stars Tour as well as the colorful coupes of the Nor-Cal Dwarf Car Association. Following last week's competition, El Dorado driver Dennis Armstrong will lead the Pro Stock field this week. After placing second in feature event action a week ago and logging a third place in heat race competition, Armstrong has started off the season on top of the point standings tied with feature event winner Charlie Mars of Yuba City with 42-points each. Mars is not expected this week following the sale of his race car last weekend. Larry Burton of Shingle Springs currently sits just one point behind the tied leaders and is tied himself with defending track champion Mike Moran of Rancho Cordova. Jeff Gavard, the 1997 Rookie of the Year rounds out the top five drivers in the early season standings. In the Pure Stock division, Matt Keeler of Placerville sits at the top of the point standings, tied with Galt traveler Les Friend. A 1997 Rookie of the Year in this division, Keeler led every lap of last week's 20-lap feature event, fending off defending track champion Eric Hansard of Orangevale to post the season opening win. David Newquist of Chico ranks third in the point standings along with Placerville driver Neil Webster. Both drivers are tied with 39-points each. Kenny Redmond of Sacramento rounds out the top five in this division. In the Midget Lites, look for defending BCRA champion David Goodwill to lead the field as he is joined by an estimated 20 competitors including terry Bergstrom, Richard Migliori, Harley VanDyke, Scott Bushing, Ryan Hogan, Andy Gregg and many more. The Nor-Cal Dwarf Cars will be making their first of several appearances Saturday, in this division defending champion Frank Munroe of Tracy is expected along with Shawn Mize, Dale Hogan, Rod Dahlgren, Tim White and many more. In Placerville's Pacific Sprint Division Billy Wallace of Grass Valley leads the point standings by a one-point margin over Joey Magaruh of Vacaville. Andy Forsberg of Auburn ranks third with Mike Benson of Calistoga and C.J. Humphreys of Placerville tied for the fourth position. Action is set to begin Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with qualifying followed by racing at 7. The grandstands will open at 5 p.m. and tickets will be available at that time adult tickets are $9, juniors and seniors $6, children $3 and under six will be admitted for free.
