Oswego, NY . . . Oswego Speedway will swing open its doors for the 52nd consecutive year on Saturday, May 11th with three weekly divisions and several special events to entertain the entire family. According to Oswego promoter Romey Caruso, "With gas prices on the rise and the tragedy of 9/11 continuing to impact our economy, I think people will be looking for entertainment venues closer to home this summer. I'm enthused that many of these people will rediscover the excitement and fun of a night at Oswego Speedway."
From an entertainment standpoint, the ISMA winged supermodifieds will terrorize the steel palace on Saturday, May 25th and Saturday, August 31 st. The incredible speeds that the drivers wring out of their supers when the wings get strapped on are nothing short of breathtaking. As of late, Dave McKnight and the Lichty Racing stables have had things their own way winning back to back Budweiser ISMA SuperNational events on Labor Day Weekend.
On Saturday, July 13th Tim Bender's Cup Lite Series invades the Big "O" with heats and a 35 lap feature which will be televised by Empire Sports Network on a taped delayed basis. The NEMA winged midgets will also make their annual appearance at Oswego Speedway on Saturday, August 31 st as part of the Budweiser Classic Weekend extravaganza.
Kids and their parents are particularly looking forward to three race nights on Oswego's 2002 calendar. Kid's Night is set for Saturday, June 15th with $.50 admission for children 12 & under, a big wheel competition, autograph session on the race track after the heats and the first 300 kids through the main gate receiving a free stop watch.
The family favorite demolition derby is on tap Saturday, June 29th, and if it's anything like last year it will be a wild night, as there were so many entrants in 2001 that two demo derbies were run simultaneously on the front stretch.
Oswego Speedway's 52nd Anniversary will be celebrated on Saturday, August 10th with admission prices just $5.00 for adults and a quarter for kids. The Anniversary Weekend will kick off with a Super Cruise in the pit area on Friday, August 9th featuring street rods, classic cars, antique cars, a live oldies band and an autograph session with Oswego drivers, past and present. As always, the Friday Super Cruise is FREE of charge.
If that's not enough, the always exciting $10,000 to Win Mr. Supermodified 50, $1,000 to Win Mr. Limited 30 and the $500 to Win Mr. Super Stock 25 is slated for Saturday, July 20th and back by popular demand the unpredictable twin supermodified features, each 30 laps in length, is set for Saturday, August 17th.
New at Oswego Speedway is the Richard Petty Driving Experience set for Saturday, June 8th. Finally, Budweiser is back to sponsor Classic Weekend and to make it more affordable for families, the two day general admission ticket introduced last year will be made available once again in 2002. Attendance was up significantly last year as an adult received an $8.00 discount off regular general admission prices and a child received a $6.00 discount by attending both events on Saturday and Sunday of Budweiser Classic Weekend. Last year's Classic was true to form with twice defending Classic champion Greg Furlong and dark horse contender Tim Snyder swapping the lead back and forth until Snyder was able to upset Furlong in the final two circuits.
