Qualified - 29th, 12.268 seconds Heat - 8th (shocks) Semi - 10th (shocks) </pre> (Middletown, Ind.) - Anderson (IN) Speedway has been very good to driver Aaron Pierce and his #26 Sam Pierce Chevrolet Racing Team in the past - a good indicator for the expected outcome for last Sunday's "Glen Niebel Classic" WorldCom USAC National Midget Series event. However, what should have been a day for victory for the team turned into a disappointment after numerous obstacles hindered their performance on the quarter-mile high banks.

Aaron's home track has been the site of many victories in the past in Legends cars, and he knows the place well. But neither Aaron nor his new teammate for this race, Travis Welpott, had any luck on their side this sunny, hot Sunday which kicked off the outdoor portion of USAC's grueling National Midget schedule.

"We just didn't have any luck at all," Aaron explained about the misfortunes that kept him watching the race from the pits. "I qualified alright, but during the heat race, we had a really strong car, but someone didn't leave me any room at all and squeezed me into the wall, giving me a flat tire. That was a bad way to start the day, but we really weren't worried because I knew I could transfer out of the semi. We had a pretty good run going in the semi, and had a solid spot that would transfer me into the feature when an oil line came loose, and I had to park it."

Travis, who is the 2000 NAMARS champion while Aaron was runner-up in that series (collecting "Rookie Of The Year" honors), fought shock problems all day long and also watched the race from the sidelines. "We didn't get rolling right. We made some good changes, and the car was certainly prepared well. But we had some problems with the shocks, and we were never able to get ahead of it."

Welpott, a good friend of Aaron's who lives in nearby Pendleton, Ind., was given the chance to run a team car to Aaron's after his own team could not get their new equipment in time for the race at Anderson. "The team was great to work with - they have so much help. Their organizational skills are good and they have really clear communication with everyone. I'd like to thank the Sam Pierce Chevrolet Racing Team. I really appreciate the opportunity they gave me."

After a disappointing start to the 2001 season, the Sam Pierce Chevrolet Racing Team heads to one of their favorite facilities - Shadybowl Speedway in Degraff, Ohio, on April 28th. Aaron was victorious at that venue in the last race of the 2000 NAMARS season, tying Jimmy McCune for the most wins in a season in that series (3 - Springport, Speedrome and Shadybowl).

"I really like Anderson, and was looking forward to this race, but it just didn't turn out like we had planned," Aaron said. "We have a few weeks off, and we'll do some testing before the next race at Shadybowl (Speedway) at the end of April. I like that track, too - I won the NAMARS race there in the last race of last season, so we should do a whole lot better."

The Sam Pierce Chevrolet Racing Team would like to thank their sponsors for the 2001 season: Sam Pierce Chevrolet, Snyder Enterprise, Long's Excavating and Cooper Tire and friend Gale Tschuor. Without their support, the team could not race.
