Andy Mason 1st Entrant For "Pepsi/Mt. Dew Knoxville Midget Championship"
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (FEBRUARY 21, 2002) - Andy Mason of Lakewood, Colorado, has filed the first official entry for the Saturday, June 1, Pepsi/Mt. Dew Knoxville Midget Championship at the legendary Knoxville Raceway. Mason, who finished fifth in points with the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association (RMMRA) last season, has entered the Roger Mason-owned Fontana-powered Ellis midget which is sponsored by Cummins Tools of Springhills, Kansas.
The $4,000-to-win championship event, the first midget car race at Knoxville in 23 years, is co-sanctioned by the Wisconsin-based Badger Midget Auto Racing Association (BMARA), the Illinois/Missouri-based Midwest Auto Racing Association (MARA), and the Ohio/Indiana-based North American Auto Racing Series (NAMARS). Practice sessions for the midget teams will occur at Knoxville on Saturday, April 13; Thursday, May 30; and again on Friday, May 31.
According to director of racing Ralph Capitani, the 2001 RPM Auto Racing Promoter of the Year, "We are both surprised and excited by the fact that the first entrant is a top young Rocky Mountain midget competitor. I guess we expected to see early entries from the Badger, MARA and NAMARS organizations. Of course, it just goes to show that this event, with it's $23,000-plus total purse, is going to attract the best of the best in the midget car industry nationally."
