Bull drives to victory at Grandview.
Bechtelsville PA - Grandview Speedway was the site of celebration for the ARDC Midgets. The Midgets made their 151st start on the 1/3-mile high-banked clay oval. The full midget show brought out past feature winners at Grandview Speedway as well; Lenny Boyd, Leigh Earnshaw Jr., Hank Rogers Sr., Van May, and Chris Crisman.
Adding himself to the record books once again was Ray Bull, Bloomsburg Pa. "It's nice to come out-of-the -box with a win," said Bull. "Tonight the track had slickened up, it was neat to find a different groove."
Bull slowly picked his way toward the front of the pack where Walt Stearly, Trappe Pa. and Kathy Kurtz, Robesonia Pa. were battling hard for the lead. "I was trying to make ARDC history tonight," said Kurtz who was making a strong attempt to win her first ever midget feature. Kurtz, who finished fifth in the point standings in 2001 is a strong contender for top honors this season.
"The track was really dry and slick," said Kurtz, "I had a really bad push towards the end and Ray started to pull away." Kurtz remains pleased with her second place finish.
As Stearly began to fade, Bull came on strong to battle with Kurtz. "It's real close hard racing," said Bull, "I was really worried about Kathy, she was running real good."
Charging hard from the rear of the pack was Steve Buckwalter, Royersford Pa. and Billy Pauch of Frenchtown NJ. Buckwalter a rookie in ARDC started dead last and charged hard from the drop of the green. "The track was fast," he said, "and it gradually got tacky." But, for Buckwalter that's fine. "Everybody is happy," he continued, "I had about 100 friends and family here to watch tonight."
The caution flew twice during the feature. Mark Freeland, Ickesburg Pa, and Steve Craig, Levittown Pa, brought out the first caution in turn two on lap 7.
Pauch was attempting a' twin win' in the midget and sprint feature became victim following the second caution. Pauch had his hopes dashed on lap 16 when he was hit from the rear, and forced to retire from the event. The hit came as repercussions from an earlier incident between Stearly and Marc Dailey, Brownsburg IN. Dailey was unable to continue.
Sunday night marked the first event for the ARDC midgets this year. Two previously scheduled events had been called for rain.
Rounding out the top five was Randy Mausteller of Bloomsburg Pa and Mike Roselli, Broadheadsville Pa.
The ARDC midgets return to Grandview Speedway as part of the Thunder on the Hill Series on Sunday May 26. "I don"t have one bad thing to say about Grandview," Bull said. "This is an excellent midget track."
Next up for the ARDC midgets is Williams Grove on Friday night May 11.
Mel Mowbray and the staff of Phoenixville Speedway will host ARDC celebrity night on Wednesday August 14. Rain date is Thursday Aug. 15. The Montgomery County Racing Club is a non-profit organization that sponsors racing for kids throughout the season. Please mark your calendars and support this fine racing organization.
