Tulsa, Okla. (December 29, 2004) - For the sixth straight year, the National Midget Driver of the Year Champion will be honored prior to the start of the O'Reilly Chili Bowl Nationals. The presentation will take place on Saturday night, January 8.
Bobby East of Brownsburg, IN, topped 514 drivers to win the honor becoming the fifth different champion. Previous winners include Jason Leffler ('99), Kasey Kahne ('00), Tracy Hines ('01), and Aaron Fike ('02, '03). East, along with the remaining top ten drivers Davey Ray, Scott Hatton, Josh Wise, David Gough, Mike Hess, Brandon Waelti, Jerry Coons, Jr., Fike, and Brad Kuhn will receive their traditional awards.
Illinois' Brett Anderson will receive the Design 500 Racewear Rookie of the Year Award, while Gaerte Engines and Stealth chassis will be honored as Manufacturers Champions. "We appreciate the Chili Bowl staff's support of this program by allowing us to present the award each season on Saturday," commented Bryan Gapinski, founder/director of the award.
East had finished the previous three seasons in tenth, fifth, and fourth place in points. "This is a great honor, and to receive this award at midget racing's biggest event adds to the prestige," said East. "We were in the hunt last year but with such a tightly competitive field you cant miss a single beat all week" commented East who finished 14th in last years championship feature on Saturday Night.
